Electricity Review

  • Electric force is the attraction or repulsion between electric charges
  • Two types of charges: positive and negative
  • Charging by friction – is the transfer of electrons from one uncharged object to another object by rubbing
  • Charging by conduction – is the transfer of electrons from a charged object to another object by direct contact
  • Charging by induction – is the movement of electrons to one part of an object that is caused by the electric field of a second object
  • conductors allow the charges of an electric current to move freely through them
  • insulators do not allow charges to move freely through them
  • voltage causes charges to move in a circuit
  • an electric current will always follow the path of least resistance
  • Ohm’s Law states that resistance is equal to voltage divided by current
  • In a series circuit…lights will dim when another one is added and if one light goes out all the lights go out because there is only one path for the current to follow
  • In a parallel circuit there is more than one path for the current to travel thus if one bulb goes out the others stay lit
  • A short circuit allows the current to take the path of least resistance
  • A current of greater than 0.2 amps can cause burns and stop your heart
  • Electromagnetism is the interaction of magnetic and electric forces
  • When an electric current is run through a wire a magnetic field is produced
  • To increase the strength of an electromagnet you can: 1. use a stronger ferromagnetic core; 2. increase the number of coils; 3. increase the current; 4. wind the coils more tightly
  • An electric current is used to turn the pointer of galvanometer
  • An electric motor transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy

It has been months since this blog was last updated. Now that my students have internet access and netbooks we can begin to use this site more actively.

Science Project due Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Title:  Characteristics of Living Things
Poster/PowerPoint Project
Worth 100 points
Due: Wednesday, October 31, 2012
Instructions:
We are learning about the characteristics that all living things in nature share.
Your goal with this assignment is to identify all 6 major characteristics of life, describe
each characteristic, and give an example of each one as well.  You may choose to
complete a poster or a PowerPoint, the guidelines for each are below.  Please be creative
about this project because it is 100 points and you do not want to wait to the last minute
to complete this project.  Here are the 6 characteristics you will need to cover, if you
don’t cover all 6 you will be deducted points!

Six Characteristics:
1. Living things are organized.  (All living things are made of cells)
2. Living things respond to the environment.
3. Living things use energy
4. Living things grow and develop
5. Living things reproduce
6. Living things exchange gases.

Poster Format
1. It must have the title: Characteristics of Living Things
2. It must have your name, date, and period on the back and your name on the front.
3. It must be neat and organized! (I can tell if you did this the night before!)
4. It must cover all 6 characteristics.
5. You must write each characteristic.
6. You must describe each characteristic.
7. You must draw or include pictures of examples of each characteristic.  No
inappropriate drawings or pictures please.  You can even include pictures of
yourself.

PowerPoint Format:
1. If you choose to complete the PowerPoint format please note that I will know if
you just slapped something together, so please put some work into it.
2. You will need to email it to me at: calliescience@gmail.com
3. You will need to follow the same guidelines as the poster format.
4. Make sure to include your name date and period on the first slide along with the
title.  Each slide must have a label!
5. After title slide make a slide listing the 6 characteristics.
6. You must turn in a print out of your PowerPoint, 6 slides per page is fine.
7. The more creative you are on the PowerPoint, the higher the grade!
